Honey

Scottish and North East Honeys

The Travelling Bee Company collects the honey made from our bees at several “apiaries” (sometimes called bee yards where beehives are located). We have strategically placed these beehives in gardens in the city, the countryside and on the hills in rural Scotland and Northumberland. We believe that honey sourced from a wide range of flowers and trees will taste great and make you feel great! And just as important, the bees love the ability to have a wide range of flowers to choose from and it helps to maintain a healthy vibrant beehive.

Honey has been valued as a natural sweetener since ancient times and often referred to as “Nectar of the Gods”. As well as the great natural taste, honey releases sugars into the bloodstream, providing an almost instantaneous supply of energy. It is easy to store, highly nutritious and contains therapeutic and medicinal benefits, some of which we are only just starting to appreciate. Many of the plants that our bees source have antibacterial properties. These properties have been recognised for thousands of years. There is growing debate and support for the use of local honey regarding building our immune system and helping to tackle seasonal allergies such as hay fever.

Honeybees will comfortably travel within a radius of 3 miles from their home. That’s 3 miles in one direction and 3 miles in the other direction. Add that to the number of beehives strategically situated and our, honey and other products contain a huge variation of flowering plants to give a unique taste with added health benefits!

These are just an indication of flowers our bees will have access to:

In the Spring: Snowdrop, Hazel, Crocus, Elm, Gorse, Yew, Willow, Blackthorn, Poplar, Plum, Cherry, Currants, Pear, Crab apple and Dandelion.

Spring and early Summer: Beech, Copper, Bluebell, Sycamore, Horse chestnut, Hawthorn, Oil seed rape, Holly, Elder, Lupin, Broad bean, Field bean, Raspberry, Poppy, Clover, Asparagus, Dogwood and Wild honeysuckle.

Summer and Autumn: Himalayan balsam, Willowherb, Bell heather, Privet, Lime, Nightshade, Knapweed, Hogweed, Onion, Meadowsweet, Field thistle, Evening primrose, Sweet chestnut, Marjoram, Ling heather and Ivy.

Guest Honeys

The Travelling Bee Company has built up a great friendship with like-minded beekeepers from further afield and is proud to be able to source top quality raw unprocessed honeys from Spain, France, Hungary and other hidden secret apiaries that collect the liquid gold.

We are kindly offered samples and the Travelling Bee Company will assess the quality (on a piece of toast!) before we offer it to our customers. You can be sure that the honeys that we source will be extra special!!

Honeycomb Sections

The Scottish Heather honeycomb is made in individual “sections”, the bees make the wax and fill it full of heather honey. The weight is therefore an average of 400g.

Natural Beeswax Candles

The Travelling Bee Company makes pure 100% hand-rolled beeswax candles.

Experts agree that candles date back to about 3000 BC and the ancient Egyptians. They were a way of extending precious light after sunset.

Today we burn candles in our homes to create an atmosphere of warmth and relaxation and to fill our homes with ambience and fragrance. Beeswax candles are associated with asthmatic and allergy relief because they purify the air unlike normal paraffin candles which pollute the air. Relax and enjoy the gentle flame as it fills your home with the scent of beeswax and honey.

Some safety tips:

  • Warning: To prevent fire and serious injury always keep a burning candle within sight.
  • Keep burning candles away from drafts, vents, ceiling fans and vibrations.
  • Keep burning candles out of the reach of children and pets.
  • Never burn a candle on or near anything that can catch fire.

Burning Instructions:

  • Trim candlewicks to 5mm each time before burning.
  • Keep candle free of any foreign materials including matches and wick trimmings.
  • Be sure the candle-holder is placed on a stable, heat-resistant surface.

  1. The Well-being Natural and Organic Hamper
  2. Travelling Bee Luxury Honey Hamper
  3. Loving Lavender Honey Gift Set
  4. Travelling Bee Harvest Hamper
  5. Scottish Heather and Juniper Hamper

Customers have used some of the hamper products in the following ways:

To eat, cook with and infuse your favourite drinks:
A jar of Wild Flower honey made by our bees or one of our guest honeys. Perfectly raw and unprocessed and delicately flavoured.

To supplement your diet:
A jar of Honey Bee Pollen. Collected from flowers and stored in honeycomb, pollen is the food of the young bee and it is approximately 40% protein. It is considered one of nature's most completely nourishing foods. It contains nearly all nutrients required by humans. About half of its protein is in the form of free amino acids that are ready to be used directly by the body. It is a holistic remedy used across the world. Long ago Greeks and Romans called natural bee pollen “the life-giving dust” or the secret “ambrosia”.

Add to your morning breakfast of cereal or porridge, add to your favourite smoothie or do as the top chefs do and use it in cooking.

Organic Bee Bread can be used in a similar way to pollen or just taken as a treat throughout the day.

To protect and nourish your lips and skin:
One of our organic hand and lip balms. Made with honey from our North East and Scottish beehives.

To clean and protect your skin:
Organic lemon balm, honey, lavender and chamomile soap or the Heather Honey and Juniper soaps. Containing the botanic and their organic essential oils. A very natural soap base certified organic by the Soil association.

To enhance your room:
Natural hand rolled beeswax candle. Infused with lavender organic essential oils. Natural beeswax candles give off a very bright light and don’t pollute the air.

In relation to our new Loving Lavender Honey Gift Set, the Latin name of lavender is Lavare, which means “to wash”, due to its aroma which has a particularly clean distinct aroma.

The health benefits of lavender essential oil include its ability to eliminate nervous tension, relieve pain, disinfect the scalp and skin, enhance blood circulation and treat respiratory problems.

Inhaling the scent of genuine lavender soap can aid relaxation and the reduction of anxiety and stress. In Germany, Lavender oil is approved for use as an anxiolytic. An anxiolytic is a medication that inhibits anxiety.

Lavender is used extensively in aromatherapy healing because of it’s calming effect on everything from insect bites to headaches.

Additional Product Information

Honey

Sourced from our honeybees from beehives across North East England and Scotland, from towns to heather moorland. The honey is removed once or twice a year depending upon the capability and location of the hive and the climate and foraging ability of the bees. Guest honeys are sourced as and when luxury honeys become available.

Beeswax

This is probably the most important substance in the hive, this is where the Queen bee lays her eggs and the worker bees tend the young and pack all the stores, therefore it is important only to take the beeswax after honey harvesting. Sourced from our honeybees from beehives across North East England and Scotland.

Propolis

Honeybees collect propolis from trees. Its main use is to seal the hive and strengthen the honeycomb. Propolis is a sticky resinous substance that can be a nightmare for beekeepers and sticky gloves when carrying out their hive checks it is so sticky! It is however often referred to as nature’s miracle cure; it has antibacterial and antifungal properties. Today, propolis is used mainly in Europe and North America. In Eastern Europe it is used in herbal medicines and as a natural supplement. Sourced from our honeybees from beehives across North East England and Scotland.

Pollen

Collected from flowers and stored in honeycomb, pollen is the food of the young bee and it is approximately 40% protein. It is considered one of nature's most completely nourishing foods. It contains nearly all nutrients required by humans. About half of its protein is in the form of free amino acids that are ready to be used directly by the body. It is a holistic remedy used across the world. Long ago Greeks and Romans called natural bee pollen "the life-giving dust" or the secret "ambrosia".

Our pollen is sourced from our honeybees from beehives across North East England and Scotland and from Spanish beehives. The pollen will be labeled according to where it has been collected.

Essential Oils

The Travelling Bee Company source their essential oils from UK suppliers who “source them direct from the field, building strong relationships with their growers, ensuring quality, environmental commitment, ethical production and outstanding value to you”.

Organic Sweet Almond Oil

Expeller Pressed from Mediterranean Almond Kernels. Suited to dry, sensitive and irritated skin. It is softening, revitalising and nourishing to the skin. Grown in the Mediterranean and obtained mainly from Spain where the climatic conditions create an excellent Oleic acid content and richness in vitamins.

Cocoa Butter (Organic) PREMIUM Unrefined

Cocoa butter is extracted from ground cacao beans using the Broma process, farmed using ethical and traditional methods in the beautiful country of Ghana.

Premium unrefined Cocoa butter has a richer natural, more chocolate like scent. Being unrefined increase the skin conditioning properties and contains a higher level of vitamins and natural minerals, rich in anti-oxidants making it great for dry and chapped skin.

Shea Butter Organic and unrefined

Extracted from the African Shea Tree using traditional methods, Shea contains Vitamins A, E and F, very helpful for repairing damaged skin caused by too much sun or general pollution in the atmosphere. Shea butter is rich in Vitamin F which rejuvenates the skin and has a feel-good effect. Shea butter has been used by Ghanaian women for generations to help protect their skin from the dry Saharan winds.

Botanic

Sourced from as close to the beehives as we can. We are proud to use botanic obtained from ethical and natural suppliers in the North East.
